Drawn to The Light

Opening Verse:

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
— John 8:12 (KJV)

 

Introduction:

In life, we often experience moments of darkness—situations that feel overwhelming or filled with uncertainty. Yet, it is in these moments that we can see the light most clearly. Just like insects are drawn to a light on a dark night, we are drawn to the light of Christ when the darkness around us feels suffocating.

Devotional Story:

There once was a man who found himself lost in a forest as the night set in. The deeper he went, the darker it became, until he could hardly see his hands in front of him. Fear crept into his heart, but just as he was about to give up hope, he saw a glimmer of light in the distance. Instinctively, he walked toward it, drawn by its warmth and brightness.

As he got closer, the light revealed a safe path leading out of the forest. He realized that the light had been there all along, waiting for him to see it. In the same way, when dark times surround us, God’s light is always shining, guiding us toward safety and peace.

What This Means:

Darkness is inevitable, but it often reveals where the true light shines brightest. When difficult things happen, they have the power to push us closer to God, the only source of light that can guide us out of life’s darkest moments. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world,” and as we follow Him, He will always lead us out of darkness.

Think About This:

Are there areas of your life that feel overshadowed by darkness? Remember, even the smallest light can overcome the deepest darkness. Just like the bugs that swarm toward the light at night, we must also turn our hearts toward Jesus, allowing His light to guide us through.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for being the light in the midst of darkness. Help me to follow Your light, especially when I feel surrounded by trouble or confusion. Let Your presence shine brightly in my life, leading me on the path of righteousness and peace. Amen.

God’s Spirit Calls Us into Light

Opening Verse

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. — Genesis 1:2 (KJV)

Introduction

From the very beginning, God’s Spirit has been moving in the void, transforming darkness into light. This same Spirit continues to call us from the darkness of our lives into the light of His presence and purpose.

Devotional Story

Imagine a dark, empty room where nothing can be seen or felt. This is how the world began—without form and void. Into this darkness, God’s Spirit moved, bringing light, order, and life. In the same way, our lives can sometimes feel formless and empty, filled with the darkness of confusion, sin, and hopelessness.

Consider a person who has lost their way, engulfed by the darkness of addiction or despair. Yet, God’s Spirit is not deterred by this darkness. Just as He moved over the waters in the beginning, He moves over the voids in our lives, ready to bring light and creation through His Word.

What This Means

God’s Spirit is always present, always moving, always ready to transform. No matter how dark or void our situation may seem, His Spirit can bring forth light and life. We are called to respond to this movement by embracing His Word, allowing it to create in us new beginnings and a deeper understanding of His purpose for our lives.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Spirit that moves over the voids and darkness in our lives. We invite You to bring light where there is darkness, order where there is chaos, and life where there is emptiness. Help us to trust in Your power to create and renew. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Shadow of Sin: The Eclipse of April 8, 2024

Opening Verse

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)

Introduction

An eclipse is a powerful natural event where the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light. This rare occurrence reminds us of how, similarly, sin can block the light of God in our lives.

Devotional Story

On April 8, 2024, people across the world will witness an eclipse, an awe-inspiring moment when daylight turns to darkness. Imagine standing under the open sky, witnessing the sun’s brilliance slowly being covered, until only a halo of light encircles the moon. This spectacle draws a striking parallel to how sin operates. Just as the moon blocks the sun’s light, sin creeps into our lives, casting shadows and dimming the spiritual light within us.

What This Means

The eclipse serves as a metaphor for the impact of sin. It shows that something as small as the moon can block the mighty sun, just as seemingly small sins can overshadow our relationship with God. But importantly, the sun is not gone; it is merely hidden. Similarly, no matter how much sin we have, the light of God’s love and forgiveness is always present, waiting to shine through once we move the obstacles away.

Think About This

Consider the temporary nature of an eclipse; it doesn’t last long before the sun shines brightly again. This transience reflects the power of repentance and redemption. Just as the darkness of the eclipse fades, so can the darkness of sin in our lives, if we turn back to God and seek His light.

Dear Lord, as the eclipse shadows our world, let it remind us of the shadow of sin that can fall over our hearts. Help us to seek Your light in every moment, to clear away the shadows, and to live in Your radiant truth. Amen.
