An Excellent Spirit


Opening Verse

“Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.”
— Daniel 6:3, KJV

Introduction

The story of Daniel is one that shines through the pages of the Bible. He was a man of integrity, faith, and an “excellent spirit.” In a world where power and position are often given to those who manipulate or force their way to the top, Daniel stands as a godly example of someone whose character made him stand out. God used this to elevate Daniel to a position of great influence.

Devotional Story

Daniel was an outsider in Babylon, taken captive from his home as a young man. Yet, he didn’t allow his circumstances to dictate his behavior. Instead of becoming bitter, Daniel chose to serve God faithfully in whatever role he was given. His integrity was so noticeable that the king thought to put him in charge of the entire kingdom. This wasn’t because Daniel was a skilled politician or because he had connections. It was because of the “excellent spirit” within him, which came from his relationship with God.

Even though Daniel’s peers were jealous of him and sought to destroy his reputation, they couldn’t find any fault in him. Daniel lived in such a way that even his enemies had to admit his righteousness. His dedication to God shaped his character, and that made him different from everyone around him.

Having an “excellent spirit” is something we should all strive for. It means living with integrity, being faithful in the small things, and maintaining a close relationship with God. And when we live with an excellent spirit, God will use us for His glory, just as He used Daniel.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I want to have an excellent spirit like Daniel. Help me to live a life that pleases You, regardless of my circumstances. Teach me to be faithful in the small things, and give me the strength to stand firm in my faith when challenges arise. Use me for Your glory, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Urgency of Integrity

Opening Verse

 “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.” – Daniel 1:8 (KJV)

 

Introduction

In a world that constantly pressures us to conform, the story of Daniel stands as a beacon of integrity and faithfulness. Daniel, a young man taken captive to Babylon, faced immense pressure to assimilate into the culture and practices of his captors.

 

Devotional Story

Upon arrival in Babylon, Daniel and his friends were selected for a royal training program, intended to erase their Hebrew identity and prepare them for service to the king. They were offered the king’s food and wine, a privilege in the eyes of many, but a compromise of their beliefs and customs. Daniel, however, resolved not to defile himself with these offerings, choosing instead to adhere to the dietary laws of his faith. His request to consume only vegetables and water was granted, and over time, Daniel and his friends appeared healthier and wiser than their peers, earning the favor of the king.

Daniel’s story is not just about dietary preference; it’s a powerful example of steadfast commitment to one’s beliefs, even in the face of adversity. His integrity and faithfulness to God brought about divine favor and wisdom, setting him apart in a foreign land.

Unshaken by the Roar

Opening Verse:

“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 (KJV)

Introduction:

In our journey of faith, we often encounter moments that test our courage and resolve. Today’s devotional delves into the biblical story of Daniel in the lions’ den, offering insights into facing our fears with faith and finding strength in God’s unwavering presence.

Devotional Story: Daniel’s Courage

Daniel, a man of unwavering faith, served under King Darius. Due to his exceptional qualities, Daniel was favored by the king, which aroused jealousy among other officials. They conspired against Daniel, tricking the king into issuing a decree that anyone who prayed to any god or man other than the king would be thrown into the lions’ den.

Daniel, aware of the decree, continued to pray to God, demonstrating his steadfast faith. As a result, he was thrown into the den of lions. Yet, his faith did not waver. God sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths, and Daniel was unharmed. This miraculous event led King Darius to proclaim that Daniel’s God was the living God, enduring forever.

Daniel’s story is a testament to the power of faith in the face of adversity. It teaches us that when we stand firm in our beliefs, God’s protection and strength are with us, even in the most daunting situations.
